Cornbread, Earl and Me/Cooley High

A black high school student, heading out of the ghetto on a basketball scholarship, is accidentally shot and killed by the police when they mistake him for an armed rapist, in "Cornbread, Earl and Me." Now, the community that viewed him as a hero must come to grips with the tragic loss of a young man who was inspiration to them all. Bernie Casey, Moses Gunn, Rosalind Cash, Tierre Turner, and Laurence Fishburne (in his feature film debut) star. And, "Cooley High" is a fine comedy/drama in the style of "American Graffiti" and "Breaking Away" starring Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs and Glynn Turman as high schoolers facing all manners of problems in the inner city. Heartfelt urban tale, which was the basis for the TV series "What's Happening!!," also stars Garrett Morris, Cynthia Davis. 3 1/3 hrs. total.
