The Last Homecoming

Alexandra and Orestes, a handsome young couple, arrive from Athens, to spend the summer holidays with Orestes' family at a beautiful picture-perfect seaside town on Cyprus. The year is 1974. Phaedra, Orestes' mother is a passionate literary teacher who decides to mount a performance of Euripides' Trojan Women by the sea, with the help of the family and the townspeople. Her husband Yiannis is a silent observer as his wife's old lover Manolis, follows closely her every move. The political turbulence between Greek and Turkish control of the island approaches a climax as Manolis, a right- wing nationalist, dreams of the unification of Cyprus with Greece. But the Turkish Cypriot neighbour Aziz and his deaf daughter Nellin, are also the closest friends of the family, the stage is set for conflict within the family. Meanwhile, Stefanos, Orestes' brother, also arrives at the family house for the summer. The differences between the two brothers are obvious and Alexandra's restless nature leads to an inevitable attraction between her and Stefanos. The play opens triumphantly, as Stefanos and Alexandra yield to their passion, while violence erupts in a coup attempt on the island - bringing to a climax the complex forces at play. A superbly produced epic drama about love, loss and betrayal.
